Ontario College of Trades: Trojan Horse for Organized Labour?

On January 1, 2013 the Ontario College of Trades was officially established by Act of the Ontario Legislature. Concerns have been raised in some quarters regarding the degree of control trade unions might exercise over the college and its activities and policies, through its governing bodies. To determine if these concerns are justified we survey the union affiliation of members of the various governing and advisory bodies attached to the College. Our findings indicate union representation in these bodies is at least between 3.42 times and 4.3 times higher than in the general population of tradespeople in Ontario and, in the case of Trade Boards in particular, could be as much as 7 times higher.
